Catherine Deatherage wins Cunningham Award

Congratulations to Catherine Deatherage, of the Sanders Lab, on winning the 2015 Leon W. Cunningham Award for Excellence in Biochemistry. Catherine presented “C99, and GSAP, and Notch, Oh My!: Structural and Biophysical Characterization of Alzheimer's Disease Related Proteins” as part of the award presentation on June 10.

The award is given annually and recognizes a third-year student in the Biochemistry Graduate Student Program who shares Dr. Cunningham’s commitment to excellence in scientific discovery. The recipient is selected by a committee of faculty members based on outstanding accomplishment in biochemistry.

“Catherine is a most deserving student,” said PI Chuck Sanders. “She continually strives for and achieves excellence in her research.”

Catherine’s research focuses on the structural and biophysical characterization of the essential transmembrane protein Notch1, but she has also worked on other Alzheimer’s disease related proteins. Once she obtains her Ph.D., she plans to further her skill set with a post-doctoral appointment and hopes to ultimately work in industry.
